Creative Metalworking with Reclaimed Materials
This hands-on workshop introduces creative metalworking using reclaimed and scrap materials in an accessible and supportive environment. Participants will learn core techniques including MIG welding, plasma cutting, grinding, and basic bending and forming, building confidence through practical making. Materials will be sourced in advance and ready to use, highlighting the creative potential of reuse. Participants may arrive with an idea or develop one during the workshop with guidance. By the end, participants will leave with a finished sculptural piece, new skills, and greater confidence working with metal.
Day 1 – Safety, Tools & Skill Building
The first day begins with a full workshop induction and safety briefing. Participants will be introduced to the workshop, safe working practices, and correct use of personal protective equipment. Each key machine and tool will then be introduced through live demonstrations, followed by guided hands-on practice so participants can become comfortable using them. This includes:
MIG welding basics and practice welds / Plasma cutting demonstrations and supervised cutting exercises / Angle grinder techniques for cutting, cleaning and finishing / Basic metal bending and forming methods.
By the end of the day, participants will have gained familiarity and confidence with each tool and will begin thinking about possible project ideas.
Day 2 – Project Development & Making
Participants begin designing and building their individual sculptural pieces. Support will be provided throughout the day to help with planning, problem solving and developing ideas from sketches or material exploration. Participants can:
Work from an idea brought to the workshop / Develop a concept on the day using the available materials (direct metal sculpture) / Receive one-to-one guidance while building their work
Day 3 – Making, Finishing & Completion
The final day focuses on completing projects and refining work. Participants will:
Continue fabrication and assembly / Learn finishing techniques such as grinding, cleaning and surface treatment / Receive guidance on presentation and care of their sculptures / The workshop concludes with an informal group sharing of finished pieces.
Accommodation: We have private rooms available for €35 per night in our residential building. Please book your tickets to the workshop on Eventbrite and then email us to see if we have a room available to: info@leitrimsculpturecentre.ie.
