Through a series of schematic drawings, Andy Roche has created a body of work based on the practice of sacred geometry. Painted and printed works are projected into 3-dimensional units which are further assembled into various modular forms. By varying the assembly and scale of each modular unit different aspects of complexity are generated; and singular units, whilst rigidly geometric in isolation, create unforeseen changing patterns in groups. In developing the work Roche has consciously upcycled materials such as cardboard evoking alternative uses for everyday materials towards a more sustainable future.

As with the 2D pieces Roche’s 3D origami pieces are modular and can be assembled in strict forms or in a more playful way in 3D tesselations that reveal their secrets in time. The 'paradoxical pyramids' and high relief pieces produced for this residency are a result of the phase change or critical point that occurs during the different processes outlined above. In this manner, the geometry keeps producing new surprises that lead the artist on a journey that began 30 years ago.

As Roche states: ‘I am a visual artist attempting to make sense of Geometric Visions by materialising them so that they can be contemplated by myself and others to obtain a better understanding of what they are. This process consists of realising the visions initially in 2D and then allowing the geometry to inform me of the next step – in other words, I regard myself as nothing more than a channel receiving information that I feel is in some way quite profound. Over the years I have learned to recognise the recurring relationships between the numbers that pop up and the ratios that present themselves. I have become aware of irrational numbers and the complex plane.’ Roche 2019
