Nollaig Molloy

Nollaig Molloy’s work derives from a fascination with the 'material-to-hand' and ‘objects of necessity’ and progresses through modes of in-depth research and engagement with people and their environments. She explores the perception of the everyday and essences of materials, how and where they are harvested. Focusing on the interplay between material, people and their surroundings, her work draws from spatial and material site specificity. Examining aspects and techniques of making, she explores the crafting of material from it's past to present use, incorporating it within contemporary contexts.

For her residency at LSC Molloy will examine the traditional use of locally sourced clay or daub in the construction of everyday objects and dwellings. Daub clay, as a material-to-hand, supplied many clay industries within the county of Leitrim from Carrick-on-Shannon, Dromahair, Lurganboy, Glenfarne, Lough Allen and Keeldrin through brick-making, pottery, crocks and jugs and it's early uses are evident in simple architectural structures using wattle and daub. Molloy will utilize this historical use of daub clay in constructing a gallery installation that includes a sound work composed from old Irish words and phrases that describe the sites where clay was once used and the importance of this material in shaping a sense of place.
