The Surlis Leitrim Chair

Exhibition Opening Friday 4th November 2022, 5pm – 8pm

LSC Community Pop-Up Shop, Main Street

Manorhamilton

The Surlis Leitrim Chair exhibition is the result of a Leitrim Heritage workshop project organised by the Leitrim Sculpture Centre during 2022.

The project set out to explore and develop the potential of traditional woodcraft techniques used in making vernacular furniture. By first constructing the original ‘shaving-horse’ tool used in this type of craft-technique, the project went on to procure seasoned local ash for making up to 20 chairs using a variety of hand-tools as well as some modern machines such as the lathe.

Up to 20 Participants took part including members of the North Leitrim Men’s group - who also made the shaving horses for the project - the North Leitrim Women’s Centre and members of the general public.

The exhibition includes examples of the shaving-horses and tools which were used, all the chairs produced including documentation from the workshops, and a video piece portraying John Surlis making the original Leitrim Chair he made popular during the 1960’s – 70’s.

Opening Hours Tuesday – Saturday 11am – 4pm

Exhibition continues until Saturday 19th November, 4pm.
