Against the Grain, Art and Agriculture I is a pilot research project that develops collaborations with artists who wish to explore agriculture and rural life locally and around the world. The project exhibition coincides with the Manorhamilton Agricultural Show that occurs every year during the last weekend of July in the town and contributes to this both as a celebration of local farming and food practices and as a critical response to industrial productions on a global scale. The aims of the project over the coming years is to generate diverse views and responses to contemporary agricultural environments and to assist the development of collaborative practice and shared knowledge between artists, farmers and rural dwellers.
The exhibition will open on Saturday 27th July between 3 and 8pm, at the Sculpture Centre in the New Line Gallery. Local food will be sourced and cooked on site alongside refreshments. A series of film works about agricultural, industrial food production and the changing landscape will be shown throughout the show. Artist’s projects include Marion Fink, Yellow Submarine; Crona Gallagher, Endangered Lives; Emma Houlihan, Indigenous; Christine Mackey, BEE WARS; Jackie McKenna, BREAD I; Fiona Mullholland, Make/Believe; Sorcha Ni hEilidhe, A Rural Testimony; Anthony O’Flynn (untitled); Helen Sharp, Museum of the Sentient (Artist in Residence 2013).
