Professional Development Residency February 2024

Hopkins is a multimedia artist working between video, collage, drawing, photography, sculpture and installation. She often works site specifcally and this culminates in ephemeral installations. She is exploring artworks that merge folklore with the human form, focusing on menstruation, native plants and rural sites of human made structures. She is interested in making abstract, hybrid connections between non human entities and our human selves, as a way to explore the rural & the urban, empathy for our natural environment & to better understand the human condition.

Joanna Hopkins has exhibited across Ireland, the UK, Europe, China and the US. Recent Solo exhibitions include Fruity Bodies at GOMA Waterford, 2023; The Growing Gallery at DLR Lexicon, Dublin, 2022; Sympathetic Soup at Dublin City University 2021. Recent Awards include Platform 31 Visual Artist Award, 2022; Arts Council of Ireland Visual Artists Bursary Award, 2023 and 2021; Dublin City University Artist in Residence Award 2020 – 2021; Artist in Residence; An Urgent Enquiry for Fingal County Council, collaborating with Mary Conroy on a site specific Public Art installation, 2019; Commissioned to create a solo exhibition for the BNA Neuroscience Conference for the Science Gallery Dublin, 2019; Artist in Residence in a Healthcare Setting for Bealtine, 2017; Mayo Arts Offce TirSaile Public Art Residency Commission A Marram Meithal; a socially engaged video & installation, 2017.
